What a quaint little area. Lots of bluffs and rolling hills, long winding roads and numerous farms dotted around the landscape. Plain is a very small community (800-ish people). But the party they put on for the Fire & EMS is one for the books. People from the town and from surrounding communities come in for the music and Sunday chicken roasts every single year. We even saw signs on the side of the road for the celebration as far as 10 miles away! Way to get the word out for such a great small town USA party!
Our arrival was promptly on time and had us ready to start setting up after stretching the ‘ol legs from the two hour drive. We were serenaded during setup by the smoky voice and songs of Shawn Schell. Besides being a phenominal singer, Shawn owns Junior’s Tavern in North Freedom, WI, which he describes as an old fashioned, eclectic, simply good times type, tavern. Go say hi and check out his place should you ever find yourself over that fine part of our State.
Show show started with one little hangup… literally. As the kabuki curtain dropped, it got hung up on the front trussing lighting cords. Quick to act, Amanda had that thing down in two shakes of a lambs tail. And then Marty swooped in with the “Jimbo Stick” to get the lighting cords back out of the way. What is a Jimbo Stick you ask?! It's nothing exciting… it's just a long pole that is used to move/aim the lights once the trussing is up in the air. Usually Jimbo does that hence its literal name.
We had one young and seemingly shy young lady named Skyler come up during a song towards the end of the show. Skyler is an aspiring drummer. She helped Frankie out with snare hits during Summer of '69. You did great young lady!
All in all, the show was a great time! We were even treated to a burger feast at the end of the night. Enough to feed the band AND crew. Thanks for the hospitality and for having us back Plain! You all know how to ROCK!
