A Word from Josh:
Anybody who knows me knows that I love to eat. So, it should come as no surprise that I will dedicate the first portion of this journal entry to discussion the theme of Ribfest. I do love me some ribs, but I would never claim to be any kind of ribs expert. Well, this event was a veritable utopia for rib connoisseurs of all stripes. The main midways of the festival were lined with high-profile storefronts for a great many vendors of ribs and other related barbecue items. Many were puctuated with bright colors, cartoon characters and claims about secret recipes and winning awards. While all of it seemed very impressive, none of it informed my decision on which one to sample. I ended up getting a half-rack from a vendor called Uncle Ed's BBQ. Why did I choose them? Quite simple, they had the shortest line and their namesake Uncle Ed himself was out front handing out free samples and making folksy conversation. That was enough for me. So, how were his ribs? Probably the best I've ever had. But, to be fair, at an event like this I wouldn't have expected anything less. As for our show, it took place on a small, permanent, partially-covered, concrete stage. In front of the stage was a dancing area and behind that was a series of benches that radiated out in a circular, amphitheater-style pattern. Live music took place here all day and directly before our set was a show from the band Dirty Boogie featuring our friend Ben Janzow on guitar and vocals. Ben gives guitar lessons at Gman Music in Waukesha where Dave also teaches. Ben also hosts a podcast called "Talking Local Music" on which Frankie and I have both been featured guests. This show was very family friendly and this point was made very obvious throughout the first half of the set as a 20-month old girl stole the show with her enthusiastic dancing. Adorable!! The area filled in quickly and we spent most of the show playing to a sea of people in all directions. John commented to the crowd that they would probably need a bigger space next year. We were very well-received and they treated us great so I certainly hope to be back next year for some more of those delicious ribs.     -Josh
