Faces in
the Crowd

Earlier in the day we had the chance to return the generosity and hospitality that we've received from so many of our loyal fans by hosting a cookout at Dave's house. Some of the people who were able to attend this fun event were Maribeth Luedtke (who hosted a cookout centered around the band back on August 19), Barb Prueher, Scott Aney, Connie Aney, Tom Birkenmeyer, Nikki Schmitz, Christine Schmitz, Kim Schmitz, Lonnie Stinewal and Chris Stinewal. When we headed to the club our mood dipped when we discovered that the sound company was running about 2 hours late. It turns out that their truck caught on fire as they were trying to leave for the show. They transfered all of their equipment into another vehicle and ended up doing a pretty good job of getting things set up given the circumstances. The show itself began with an opening act: Dr. Shrinker featuring original Cherry Pie member Don Peaslee on bass and long-time Cherry Pie drum roadie Tom "Hog" Hilber on drums. They are a new band that plays cover songs from the 80s and 90s. The crowd enjoyed their set and later their lead singer John Heckel joined us on stage for the vocals on "New Girl Now". Predictably, our first set contained some technical problems ranging from a broken guitar string to complete loss of power on the left side of the stage during "Fantasy". But, as usual, the rockin' support of the strong crowd kept spirits high. Never were they higher than when John offered some promotional T-shirts and caps to women who would bare their breasts on the dance floor. There were quite a few takers, which fit with the club's reputation that we had heard about :-) Familiar faces in the crowd (in addition to those who had come from the cookout) included Erika Kaegler, Lynn Rittberg, Heather Peaslee, Sherry Becker, Lynn Smith, Robyn Amber, Dawn Busalacchi, Andi Brodsky and Sheila Tate. Earlier in the week Sheila had requested that we learn "Love of a Lifetime" by Firehouse since she was planning to come to the show with her new boyfriend (apparently she's pretty serious about him). We did learn it and dedicated it to her although by then we had learned that her boyfriend had fallen ill and could not come to the show. That didn't stop Sheila from being quite touched by the sentiment as she ran onto the stage to give John a grateful hug at the end of the song (kinda gives you warm fuzzies, doesn't it?). Some new friends that we met this night included Debbie Mann, Sarah Freis, Mandy Palzewicz, Tricia Marcusen and Amy Maus.    -Josh
